Regarded as one of the best ice hockey referees of his day, Pertti Juhola had a lengthy career both in Finland and at international competitions. Juhola first refereed in the Finnish Championships in the 1973–74 season, spending the next 21 seasons officiating in more than 560 matches. In the 1986–87 season he was the inaugural recipient of the Golden Whistle, awarded by the Finnish Ice Hockey Association for the best referee, before winning it again in 1990–91. Juhola also won the Unto Wiitala trophy on three occasions (1978–79, 1984–85, 1986–87) as the best referee selected by the league’s referee training group.
Internationally Juhola refereed matches at the World Championships in both 1983 and 1985, as well as the 1984 Sarajevo Olympics. After retiring in 1994 he continued to work in the sport as a referee observer, in addition to training new referees. He also worked in sales for an insurance company. In 1995 Juhola was inducted into the Finnish Hockey Hall of Fame.
