Sam Hays served in the British Army in World War I with the Labour Corps of the Leinster Regiment, fighting at the Battle of the Somme in 1916. His brother Archibald was killed in action the following year. After his days in the Army, Sam had a long police career, joining the Royal Ulster Constabulary (RUC) in 1925. An all-round sportsman, he represented the Army and RUC at football and played rugby for Donore RUFC.
Hays first got involved with boxing in 1915 and in a near lifetime in the sport served as a referee, judge, and secretary of the Ulster Boxing Council of the Irish ABA. He was also a coach at the De La Salle Boxing Club in Belfast. Hays started refereeing in 1939 and went on to officiate in many bouts around the United Kingdom and across Europe, including the 1960 Roma (Rome) Olympics.
After retiring from the police force in 1955, where he reached the rank of head constable (equivalent to chief inspector), Hays became an accident investigator for an insurance company. In October 1971, Hays’ Belfast home was destroyed in a bomb blast during the Northern Ireland troubles. Hays was away in England with an Antrim boxing team at the time, but his wife and daughter were injured in the blast. Hays’ son Archie also served in the RUC and was an assistant chief constable when he retired.
