Biography

Tullio Lanese officiated in 159 Serie A matches between 1978-92, including the Milano and Genoa derbies, and matches involving Juventus and the two Milano giants, A. C. and Internazionale. He officiated at two Italian Cup finals (1986 and 1989), and the Italian Super Cup of 1991. Lanese won the Giovanni Mauro Award as Best Referee of the Year in 1988.

An international referee between 1986-92, Lanese had charge of one game at the 1988 Seoul Olympics. At the FIFA World Youth Championship the following year, he refereed two matches, including the quarter-final between Brazil and Argentina. He was also a linesman for the final between Portugal and Nigeria. At the 1990 FIFA World Cup in Italy, Lanese was in charge of three games, including a group match between Brazil and Sweden. The following year, he refereed the European Cup final between Red Star Belgrade and Marseille, won on penalties by the Serbian team.
