Born in Italy, Vincent Mauro emigrated to the United States in 1964 where he became a noted football referee and linesman. One of Mauro’s first international assignments was officiating at the 1987 Under-20 World Cup in Chile. A year later he officiated in four matches at the 1988 Seoul Olympics, including being the referee in the fixture between Brazil and Nigeria. The best was yet to come when Mauro was given the opportunity to referee at the 1990 FIFA World Cup in the country of his birth. At Italia 90 he worked as a linesman in five matches and the referee for the group stage fixture between Belgium and South Korea. Off the pitch Mauro served as US Soccer’s Director of Officials (1991–97) and as a member of the FIFA panel of instructors (1994–97). In 1998 he was inducted into the Massachusetts State Soccer Hall of Fame.
