Biography

He turned professional in 1950 and won the Australian championship in his ninth professional fight. In 1952 Carruthers won the world bantamweight championship by defeating South Africa’s Vic Toweel. This made him the first Australian to hold a world professional championship since Young Griffo in 1890. Carruthers retired undefeated in 1954 and relinquished the crown. In 1961 he made a brief, unsuccessful, return to the ring, losing four of six fights. He later became a boxing referee. Career Record: W - 21 (KO 13); L – 4 (KO by 1); D - 0.
