Biography

Miklós Holop started his sports career in athletics, inspired by Mihály Iglói – the famous track and field coach, who was his physical education teacher at the Secondary School. Holop started as a hurdler but later switched to water polo.

From 1941 Holop played for the MAFC water polo team and between 1947-52 was a member of the Hungarian national team. In 1947 they won the Universiade in Paris, after finishing fourth at the European Championship at Monte Carlo. At the 1948 London Olympics Hungary won the silver medal, with Holop playing on the team. In 1951 he won a gold medal at the Berlin Universiade. Playing with Budapesti Honved, Holop won Hungarian titles in 1953, 1954 and 1958.

Holop retired from active sport in 1958. He had graduated from university with an engineering degree and later worked for the Military Engineering Institute, before retired in 1980.
