Biography

Sammy Moore was born and raised in Belfast and was well-known as the proprietor of SS Moore, a successful sports equipment store on Bridge Street in Belfast. A multi-sport athlete, Moore was an active footballer, playing at the amateur level for Bangor and Cliftonville as a goalkeeper in the 1920s and 1930s, including an international appearance versus Scotland in 1933.

Also a noted golfer, Moore was a life member of the Belvoir Park Golf Club, competing in the Belfast & District Cup, Ulster Cup, Barton Shield and Senior Cup, and won the Hermitage Amateur Professional Foursomes with his partner, Fred Daly (winner of The Open Championship in 1947). A member of the East End Swimming Club in Belfast, Moore played on the Irish Olympic water polo team at Amsterdam in 1928, which lost in its only match to Belgium, and competed in the Tailteann Games later that same year.
