Saleh Hussain took up weightlifting at the age of 10 after being inspired by his older brother Adly. By 1957 he had set national records and was winning regional and national championships as a lightweight, which led him to be recruited for the Egyptian national team. At the 1963 World Championships he finished sixth, while in 1964 he represented his country at the Tokyo Olympics, where he placed ninth. He retired from active competition in 1969 and went on to manage the Cairo regional team, in addition to working with the national squad as a trainer. A relatively rare athlete to have come from the city of Asyut, by career he worked for a company owned by compatriots from that city.
