Biography

Jouni Grönman is considered as the second best Finnish weightlifter ever, behind Kaarlo Kangasniemi. His greatest year was 1984; at the end of April, Grönman, who competed as a lightweight throughout his career, won a surprising silver medal at the European Championships and then, three months later, captured bronze at the Olympics, also considered to be that year’s World Championships. Before his great 1984 season, Grönman had made his international début at the 1983 European Championships, where he was fifth, and also competed at the 1983 World Championships, where he was sixth. After the 1984 Olympics, Grönman continued to compete at every major international tournament until the 1996 Olympics, usually finishing in the top 10. His other best finishes at major internationals were fifth at the 1992 Olympics and fourth in both the 1985 and 1986 World Championships. Grönman also won five Nordic titles between 1981 and 1990 and 15 Finnish titles between 1980-99.
