Biography

Jouko Leppä was a Finnish super-heavyweight weightlifter who was a three-time national champion and a three-time Olympian. Leppä won his first national title in 1972 to earn himself a place at the München Olympics. At the Games he narrowly missed out on a medal when he and Gerd Bonk (GDR) both lifted 572.5 kg. The German weightlifter, however, had a lower bodyweight prior to the start of the event and therefore won bronze. After the Games Leppä won back-to-back Finnish titles in 1974 and 1975, along with the Nordic title also in 1975. One year later he returned to the Olympics for the Montréal Games but did not provide a valid lift in the snatch. In 1980 he competed at his third and final Games in Moskva, but again did not provide a valid lift.
