Biography

German weightlifter Oliver Caruso captured the bronze medal at the 1996 Atlanta Olympics in the middle-heavyweight class. Four years earlier at Barcelona, he finished 18th in the middleweight division. At World Championships, he won two gold (1998, 2002), one silver (1998), and one bronze medal (2002). At European Championships he added another gold (1998), and two silvers (1996, 1997).

Caruso was awarded the Silver Bay Leaf, Germany’s highest sports award. He later turned to coaching and became regional chief coach in Baden-Württemberg. In 2013 he was appointed the German chief national coach.
