Biography

Weightlifter Roland Lortz worked as a butcher in his parent’s butchery. He started his sports career in his youth claiming his first podium in 1953 at the West German Youth Championships. In 1956 he placed fourth at the European Championships as a lightweight. Lortz then moved to middleweight and finished sixth at the 1957 Worlds. At the 1960 Roma Olympics, where he finished eighth, he was the only West German weightlifter qualifying for Germany, as the other six were from East Germany. Lortz died in 2007 after a long illness.
