Biography

Weightlifter Helmut Opschruf set three middleweight clean & jerk world records in 1935-36. Despite this, the German Weightlifting Federation nominated Rudolf Ismayr and Adolf Wagner for this class at the Berlin Olympics and Opschruf was selected for the light-heavyweight division finishing fourth. Silver medal winner Eugen Deutsch was initially disqualified for missing all three snatches, but on appeal, the jury reinstated one of his snatches which moved him into second place, to the consternation of the non-German competitors and also Opschruf, who missed out on a bronze medal.
