Biography

German Helmut Schäfer finished an unfortunate fourth in the featherweight weightlifting competition at the 1932 Los Angeles Olympics. At the age of seven years he was an all-round youngster, and pursued art, motor sports, wrestling, weightlifting and lawn weight training. He was German weightlifting champion in 1931 and won two bronze medals at the European Championships (1929 and 1933). In 1932 and 1935, he was World Champion and in 1931 the German Champion.

His special event was the bumping with both arms, where he set two world records. After finishing his sporting career, he worked as a manager of weightlifters and art strength athletes, referees and officials. A trained car mechanic, he later founded a taxi company in Stuttgart.
