György Rehus-Uzor

György Rehus-Uzor was born in Budapest, but started weightlifting in Győr. In 1965 he moved to Szombathely and joined Haladás, where he was coached by Géza Tóth, who helped to develop his talent. Rehus-Uzor competed in the middle-heavyweight category, and was the 1974 national champion. Between 1976-78 he won four bronze medals at the European Championships and, at the 1978 World Championships in Gettysburg, was placed second in the snatch. In total he finished a best-ever fifth position, with a total of 365 kg (165 kg, 200 kg).

Rehus-Uzor was unlucky when it came to the Olympics. He prepared for four Games, but only competed once, in 1976. He finished fifth, but was eventually promoted to fourth following Phil Grippaldi’s disqualification. Rehus-Uzor had been a reserve for München 1972, lost out to club mate Ferenc Antalovics in 1980 and, because the Hungarian athletes did not go to Los Angeles in 1984, he missed out on the chance of a second Olympic appearance. Rehus-Uzor went to Barcelona in 1992, however, as an assistant coach of the national team. After his retirement, he won the Master’s World Championship three times.
