Giuseppe Fago had been sailing in the Gulf of La Spezia since he was a boy. He achieved his first significant national result in the 1933 Italian 6-metre Championship, and after winning several races in 1934-35, set his sights on the Berlin Olympics.
Feeling confined in the 6-metre class, where competition was fierce, Fago competed in the dinghy class at the Olympic trial regattas at Istria and won three out of four races and finished second in the other. He dominated the overall standing and was called him up for the Berlin Games.
At the Olympic regatta at Kiel, Fago competed in the one-person dinghy Olympic class. In challenging weather conditions, including heavy rain and variable or no wind, Fago performed well despite a breakdown that forced him to retire from the third race. He eventually finished fifth overall. Fago failed to achieve any further notable victories after the Olympics.
