Biography

Richard Gates sailed in the Star Class at the 1972 Olympics, as crew for Alan Holt. They continued to sail Star events after the 1972 Olympics, but the class was temporarily dropped from the Olympic Program in 1976. Gates was a graduate of The Ohio State University, earning both a bachelor’s and masters’ degree in mechanical engineering. He and Holt competed for the Corinthian Yacht Club and later formed their own company, Spartech, which designed and manufactured Star Class masts.
