Born in Östergötland, Emil Hagström later moved to Stockholm. In 1918, he became director of Tobacco Office in Jönköping. There, he lived for 17 years, before he returned to the Stockholm region. For the last 10 years of his life, he suffered from asthma, which eventually caused his death. He was married to Anna Linnéa (née Norström) and was a member of the Swedish order society “Par bricole”.
Hagström was a member of the crew of the KSSS 1912, named after his club, the Royal Swedish Sailing Society (Kungliga Svenska Segel Sällskapet). The boat scored no points in the 8-metre class at the 1912 Olympic Games, placing sixth of seven yachts in both races.
