Biography

András Haán had been sailing with his father since he was a child and at the age of 12 had already won a youth championship title. During his high school years, he began to play basketball and soon was selected to the youth national team and then played in the Hungarian first division. At the age of 17, playing for VTSK, Haán scored 50 points in a league game, and averaged over 20 points/game. At age 18, he played for Hungary at the 1964 Tokyo Olympics, but after the Olympics sustained a serious knee injury and had to give up basketball. He then returned to his first sport, sailing in the colors of BKV Előre.

Haán placed fourth at the 1967 Junior European Championships. Between 1970 and 1983, he won 10 national titles, and 12 years after his first appearance at the Olympics he qualified in sailing for the 1976 Montréal games and finished 17th in the Finn Dinghy class.

Haán graduated at the medical university during his sports career and later became a renowned cardiac surgeon. He worked at MÁV Hospital, then as the chief doctor of the National Institute of Cardiology, performing nearly 2,000 heart surgeries during his career. For a short period of time he also worked in England and the United States. At the 2006 Masters World Championships, he placed second in Finn Dinghy in the over-60 category.
