Robert Stinson attended Princeton, graduating in 1955, where he played lacrosse, and helped Princeton win the 1953 Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association championship. He was named third-team All-American in lacrosse. Stinson sailed for the Vineyard Haven Yacht Club. At the time of the 1956 Olympics he was a Navy officer.
