Long distance runner Gerhard Hartmann was Austrian champion at 5,000 metres (1985-87, and 1989), 10,000 metres (1988-89, and 1992), 25 km road running (1981-83), marathon (1984, 1987, and 1992), and cross country (1981-92). Hartmann represented Austria at the 1984 Los Angeles Summer Olympics in the marathon but did not finish.
At the 1986 European Athletics Championships in Stuttgart, Hartmann finished ninth in the 10,000 metres. He won the Bern Grand Prix in 1987 and 1988, and the Greifenseelauf in 1988 and 1989. By profession, Hartmann was a toolmaker.
