Biography

Belgian all-round track and field athlete Gaston Étienne specialised in the pole vault and the javelin. At the 1928 Amsterdam Olympics Étienne finished in 22nd place in the javelin and 23rd place in the decathlon. After the Olympics he became a two-time Belgian champion in the pole vault (1929, 1931), and a four-time champion in the javelin (1929–30, 1932, 1934). During the late 1920s and early 1930s Étienne improved the Belgian javelin record multiple times, eventually finishing his career with a best throw of 59.34 metres in 1930.
