Biography

Brazilian track and field athlete Alfredo Mendes won medals in both the high jump and the 110 metres hurdles at the South American Championships. Mendes won his first medal with gold in the 110 metres hurdles in 1935, with him winning another title in the event in 1939 and a bronze in 1937. In the high jump he won bronze in 1937 and silver in 1941. Mendes competed in the high jump at the 1936 Berlin Olympics, tying for 23rd place with eight other athletes who all cleared 1.80 metres.
