Biography

As an upcoming youth and junior athlete Ruben Sørensen won multiple Danish middle-distance titles and set several under-23 national records. Sørensen won three gold medals at the Danish Youth Championships; with two in the 1,500 metres (1973, 1974) and one in the 800 metres (1973). He won his first national title as a senior in 1975 with gold in the 1,500 metres. Sørensen retained his title the following year along with winning gold in the 3,000 metres steeplechase. These performances earned him a place on the Olympic team for the Montréal Games, where he ran in the 1,500 metres but was eliminated in the heats.

Sørensen continued to have success on the track back home in Denmark, winning the 800 metres and 1,500 metres in 1979. His final Danish title came a year later when he once again became the national champion in the 3,000 metres steeplechase.

Personal Best: 1500 – 3:39.6 (1979).
