Biography

Dionisio Carreras Salvador, also known as El Campana, was a Spanish long-distance runner who enjoyed his best success during the 1920s. Carreras began running to cover the long distances from town to town in the Spanish countryside where the infrastructure lacked any form of public transport. The football team Zaragoza FC first took advantage of his local fame as a runner and employed him as their caretaker.

In 1924 Carreras won the Media marathon, which was used to select athletes for the Paris Olympics. He ran in the marathon at the 1924 Paris Games where he finished in a very credible ninth place. He later admitted that he could have finished in a better position if he had not made a mistake in the final kilometres of the race. Over the next few years he won multiple long-distance races in Spain including becoming the Spanish marathon champion in 1928. Carreras was selected to run in the marathon at the 1928 Amsterdam Olympics but an illness prevented him from competing.
