As a child, Julio Gómez was sent to the Soviet Union during the Spanish Civil War for safety reasons. While there, he developed his talents in athletics and became a top-level track athlete in university. He returned to Spain in 1956 and made the national team three years later. His most successful year was 1960, as he set the Spanish indoor record over 1000 metres, was the national champion in the 1500 metres, took bronze in that event at the Ibero-American Games, and was selected to represent Spain at the Rome Olympics. At the latter, he was eliminated in round one of the 800 metres. He retired from active competition in 1963.
