Biography

Reijo Höykinpuro first reached the podium at the Finnish national athletics championships in 1958, when he was third in the 5,000 metres. He won his first title, in cross-country, the following year, and was then crowned champion in the 5,000 metres in 1960. This led to his selection to represent his country in that event at that year’s Rome Olympics, where he was eliminated in round one. He was then the Nordic champion in the 5,000 and 10,000 metres in 1961, and the national champion in both of those events in 1962. He received his final international medal (bronze in the 5,000 at the Nordic Championships) and national podium finishes (silver in the 5,000 metres and cross-country) in 1963, before retiring from active competition.

Personal Best: 5000 – 13:52.6 (1959).
