Biography

During the late 1920s and early 1930s Bengt Sjöstedt was one of the best hurdlers in Finland. Sjöstedt equalled the world record in the 110 metres hurdles and competed at two Olympic Games. At the 1926 national championships he won silver when he finished just behind Erkka Wilén. The following year he won his first Finnish title in addition to finishing in third place at the Finland-Sweden Athletics International meet. At the selection process for the 1928 Amsterdam Olympics Sjöstedt ran 14.9 seconds to earn himself a place on the team, where he ultimately reached the semi-finals. In September 1931 he ran 14.4 seconds in Helsinki to equal the world record. It remained the world-best time until 1934 and a Finnish record until 1967. Sjöstedt competed at his second Olympics in 1932 in Los Angeles where he once again reached the semi-finals.

Personal Best: 110H – 14.4 (1931).
