Biography

French all-round sportswoman Marguerite Radideau competed throughout the 1920s in both track and field athletics and basketball. On the track Radideau won multiple medals and set several world and French records. She replicated her success on the basketball court, winning national and international competitions. At the French athletics championships she won gold in the 60 metres (1930), 80 metres (1924–26), 100 metres (1928, 1930), and the 250 metres (1925–26). She also finished on the podium multiple times, winning medals in the standing high jump, shot put, discus throw, and javelin. In 1926 she was also the holder of the world record in the 60 metres, 80 metres, and 100 yards.

Radideau competed at the 1924 Women’s Olympiad in London where she won bronze in the 100 yards. Two years later she won four medals at the Women’s World Games in Göteborg, with gold in the 60 metres and 100 yards, silver in the 4 x 110 yards relay, and bronze in the 250 metres. Her performances earned her a place on the French Olympic team for the 1928 Amsterdam Games where she reached the semi-finals of the 100 metres and finished fourth in the 4 × 100 metres relay.

In addition to track and field athletics Radideau played basketball with Linnet’s Saint-Maur where she won three consecutive French championship titles from 1928 to 1930. Also in 1930 she was part of the French national team that won gold at the European Championships and silver at the World Championships. In 2020 Radideau was inducted into the French Basketball Academy Hall of Fame in the Pioneers category.

In 1931 Radideau married Emile Schoebel, the brother of the French diver Alfred Schoebel. Marguerite and Emile’s son Pierre competed in the hurdles at the 1968 Mexico Olympics.
