Born in Portugal in 1964, Luis Soares competed in long-distance running events for the country of his birth before moving to France in 1986, when he became a French citizen three years later. He had his first major victory in 1987 when he won the Lille Marathon in 2-14:41. Soares´ best performance came in 1992 when he won the Paris Marathon in 2-10:03, setting a national record that stood until 1998. This earned him a place on the Olympic team for the 1992 Barcelona Games, but he had a disappointing race, finishing 45th. Soares competed in his final international race in 1999 when he ran in the marathon at the World Championships in Sevilla (Seville), Spain.
