Biography

Gao Baozheng was born in Northeast-China and moved to Shanghai as a child. In 1936, he joined Tung Hwa playing right forward and inside forward, mainly in team B, and occasionally in team A. Five years later, he moved to the new Dragon team, later part of Long Wei. Gao then joined Tsing Peh in 1946 and changed his position to right midfielder. Working for the Beijing-Shanghai Railway, he became part of their team placing second in Shanghai’s First Division in the 1948-49 season. In 1948, Gao represented Shanghai in the Shanghai-Hong Kong Cup. In the early years of the People’s Republic of China, he played with the National Railway team (later Locomotive) in the national competition, later in the national league and other national tournaments. Gao had been selected for the provisional team for the 1952 Helsinki Olympics and retired in 1958. His coaching career started as player-coach with the National Railway team before he went to Inner Mongolia in the late 1950s to work for the Inner Mongolia Railway System Sports Association. Gao returned to Shanghai in 1962 and retired at the People’s Machinery Factory in 1979. Due to his excellent headers he was nicknamed “Anti-aircraft gun”.
