Full-back Tom Murphy was not used in the two matches played by the Republic of Ireland (then the Irish Free State) at the 1924 Paris Olympics but did make his début in the friendly against Estonia at the Stade de Colombes the day after the quarter-final defeat by Netherlands. He then played in Ireland’s first home game against the USA at Dalymount Park, Dublin, on 14 June 1924 (although some sources incorrectly say 16 June). They were his only two international appearances.
At club level, Murphy played for Dublin side St. James’s Gate and was a member of the team that won the League and Cup double in the inaugural season of the new Irish Free State (later the Football Association of Ireland) in 1920/21.
