Biography

Rinus Schaap was a midfielder for Hilversum clubs Donar and ‘t Gooi before leaving for France to become a professional - a Dutch pro league would not be founded until 1954. In France, he played for Toulouse FC and Racing Club de Paris. Being a professional meant Schaap was banned from playing any matches for the national team, but this ban was lifted in 1955, allowing Schaap to reach a total of 13 caps (1 goal). In 1955, Schaap returned to ‘t Gooi, but transferred to SC Enschede in 1957 where, aged 37, he played with another aging star and former Olympic team mate, Abe Lenstra. In his first season, Enschede nearly captured the title, losing 1-0 in overtime in a tie-breaker against DOS. Schaap, who ran a cigar store, later also coached several amateur sides, including ‘t Gooi.
