Biography

Victor Costello won his first national shot put title at the age of just sixteen and won five Irish titles between 1987 and 1991. He retired from athletics following the Barcelona Games and turned his attention to rugby. Costello, who played provincial rugby for Connacht and Leinster, made his debut for Ireland against the USA in 1996 and went on to play 39 times for Ireland as a back row forward including at the 2003 Rugby World Cup. Costello scored four tries for his country. He matched the achievements of his father, Pat Costello, who was also both national shot put champion and an Irish international rugby player.
