Biography

Pat Hooper was Irish national champion in the marathon in 1979, then winning a silver medal in that event in 1980. He competed at the 1980 Moskva Olympics, running the marathon alongside his brother Dick Hooper, who later ran the marathon at the 1984 and 1988 Olympics. Pat Hooper competed at the 1978 European Championships, placing 27th in the marathon.

Hooper worked in administration with Raheny Shamrock Athletic Club, helping develop it into one of Ireland’s strongest clubs. He served on Athletics Ireland’s competition committee, founded the Raheny 5-mile road race, was a chairman of Leinster Athletics, and also served as chairman of the Dublin Athletic Board.
