Biography

René Steurbaut spent his entire basketball career with his local Hellas Gent club, which is now the Gent Hawks. He also had a lengthy career with the Belgian national team, and attended EuroBasket 1947 as a reserve, although he did not actually play in the nation’s fourth-place finish. His next stop was the 1948 London Olympics, where Belgium was eliminated from contention during the round-robin pool and placed 11th overall after a walkover in the first classification round, then a loss to Canada, followed by a victory over the Philippines. Steurbaut played in four of the team’s seven matches. He final international appearance came at EuroBasket 1953, where Belgium placed 10th. By career Steurbaut was a clerk, and he gained attention in May 2016 for having been married to his wife for over 65 years.
