Biography

Franco De Menego was an endurance athlete. He first competed internationally at the 1968 Military World Championships (CISM) in cross-country running and the same year competed at the Winter Universiade at Innsbruck in the 15 km and 4x10 km relay. At his only Olympic participation, in 1972, he was 38th in the marathon in 2-26:52, while his personal best of 2-19:56 was set the same year. He retired shortly after the München Olympics.

In 1980 De Menego began a political career in Cortina d’Ampezzo. From 1982-87 he was deputy mayor and then mayor from 1987-90. After serving in the Belluno provincial administration, he ran for re-election as mayor in 2002 but he was defeated by Giacomo Giacobbi, and in 2007 lost another mayoral election to Andrea Franceschi.
