Biography

Giovanni Lievore was an Italian javelin thrower in the later 1950s. Left-handed, he first came to attention in 1955 in Italy. After a disappointing start to the 1956 season, Lievore broke out in the second half by beating the national record twice, in August in Padova (71.00) and then in Roma (73.76), winning the Italian title ahead of his brother Carlo. Giovanni threw in the qualifiers with a Held javelin given to him by the American Al Cantello at the Military World Championships (CISM) in Berlin.

At the Melbourne Olympics Lievore surprised by finishing sixth which, as of 2024, is still the best placing for an Italian javelin thrower at the Olympics. In September 1957 he lost his Italian record to his brother Carlo and in 1958, apart from a disappointing eighth place at the European Championships in Stockholm, he still had a great year which culminated on 12 October in the meeting in Roma with a national record of 80.72 metres which brought him to 11th place on the all-time list.

Personal Best: JT – 80.72 (1958).
