Biography

During the 1910s and 1920s all-round track and field athlete Giuseppe Tugnoli won a dozen titles at the Italian championships. A specialist in throwing events, Tugnoli won his first titles in 1913 with victory in the shot put and the stone throw. He won further titles either side of World War I, winning the shot put (1914, 1920, 1923), discus throw (1914, 1922–23), stone throw (1914, 1919–20), and javelin (1919). Tugnoli was also an accomplished high jumper who held the Italian national record from 1916 until 1919. He was selected to compete in the shot put and discus at the 1912 Stockholm Olympics but did not start in either discipline. He eventually got to compete at the Olympics after the war, finishing 14th in the shot put at the 1920 Antwerpen Games.
