Biography

Dutch track and field athlete Bets ter Horst excelled in sprinting, hurdling, and the high jump, with her winning seven national titles across the three disciplines. Ter Horst won her first Dutch athletics title in 1927 with victory in the high jump, before becoming the 100 metres champion the following year. These performances secured her a place at the 1928 Amsterdam Olympics where she ran in the 100 metres and the 4 × 100 metres relay, finishing fifth in the latter. After the Olympics she won two more national titles in the 100 metres (1929, 1932), along with three consecutive titles in the 80 metres hurdles (1931–33). She also won the 80 metres hurdles title at the English AAA Championships in London, England in 1933. In the late 1920s and early 1930s she set Dutch records in the 100 metres, 80 metres hurdles, and the 4 x 100 metres relay.
