Biography

Gerhard Olsen was selected for the 1912 Olympic Games after jumping 1.837 m at the last qualifying competition in June in Kristiania and setting a national record. In Stockholm, however, he only cleared 1.75 m and did not qualify for the final. At Norwegian Championships he was the eternal bridesmaid, winning silver in 1915 and three consecutive times 1917-19. He also played football for Sportsklubben Vard Haugesund.

Olsen was trained as a clerk working in this profession until 1914. In 1917, Olsen already worked as an agent and broker and changed his name to Meling. In 1916, he married Martha Magdalene Hemmingstad. Later, he got married for a second time. 1919-27 Meling was department manager at H. M. Wrangell & Co. A/S, shipowners. He then started his own coal business named Gerhard Meling & Co. A/S. From 1930, he was co-manager.
