Biography

Henrique Santos was a Portuguese distance runner who competed in the steeplechase at the 1928 Amsterdam Olympics. It was apparently his first steeplechase and no other marks are known from his athletic career. However, in Amsterdam Santos watched the fencing competitions and took up that sport upon his return to his native Madeira. He later had business in Panama, where he won the épée championship of that nation.

In 1936 Santos came to the United States, joining the New York Athletic Club. He won the US title in épée in 1942, and helped the NYAC win the national team épée title that year. He later fenced on NYAC 3-weapon national championship teams in 1942, 1947, and 1951. Settling in the United States, he eventually died in New Haven, Connecticut.

Personal Best: 3000S – unknown.
