Biography

Yevgeny Ivchenko was on the Soviet national team as a 20 km walker in the early 1970s. He competed at the 1971 and 1974 European Championships and 1972 Olympics, but had little success, as he was disqualified at the Olympics, and placed 8th and 15th at the 1971 and 1974 Europeans, respectively. He won 20 km walk silvers at the 1971, 1972, 1974 and 1975 Soviet Championships.

Ivchenko then switched to the longer distance when he was nearly 40-years-old and after winning the 50 km walking title at the 1980 Soviet Championships, won the 1980 Olympic bronze, three days after his 42nd birthday. In 1980 Ivchenko set a disputed, and unratified, world best in the 50 km track walk when he clocked 3-37:36.0.

Personal Bests: 20kmW – 1-24:54 (1976); 50kmW – 3-50:24 (1979).
