The top hammer thrower in 1928 was Frank Connor of Yale, but he only placed fourth at the Final Trials. Ed Black of the University of Maine, the Boston AA, and the Newark AC led the Americans in Amsterdam. After the qualifying round at the 1928 Olympics, Black was in second place, but he eventually finished third. He won the AAU in 1928 and the IC4A in 1929. Black did not confine his athletic talents to the track. In high school he was an all-state fullback, and in 1970 he was the Maine state champion in bowling. He made his living as a lobsterman.
