Biography
The son of a Methodist Episcopalian minister, George Bretnall graduated from Cornell College (Iowa) in 1921, and competed at the 1920 Olympics while a student at the school. Bretnall initially became a coach at Baker University in Kansas. In 1937 he moved to Ames, Iowa where he became track coach at Iowa State University from 1937-50. Bretnall served in the medical corps in France during World War II. He was a charter member of the Cornell College Athletic Hall of Fame and was inducted into the Baker University Athletic Hall of Fame.
