Biography

Morgan Groth won the AAU 880 y in 1965, after placing third in 1963 and fourth in 1964. He won the 800 at the 1964 Olympic Trials. Groth competed for Oregon State and the Staters Track & Field Club, and later for the Quantico Marines. He also ran the mile and 1,500, but did not compete internationally in that event, although he won the 1965 NCAA title. In May 1965, at the California Relays, Groth anchored an Oregon State team to the world record of 7:19.0 in the 4x880y relay.

As a high school student, Groth won the 1961 Golden West Invitational mile in 4:10.0, at the time a US high school record. He is a member of the Oregon State Athletic Hall of Fame and the Oregon Sports Hall of Fame.

Personal Bests: 800 – 1:45.7y (1964); 1500 – 3:40.4 (1964); Mile – 3:57.9 (1964); 2 miles – 9:00.1 (1964).
