Biography

Roy Martin was a high school sprint phenom who was Track & Field News male high school athlete of the year in 1984 and 1985, the first to ever win that award twice. Running out of Roosevelt High School in Dallas, Martin just missed the 1984 US Olympic team when he finished fourth in the 200 at the Olympic Trials. He attended Southern Methodist University but his potential never materialized. Although he made the 1988 US Olympic team he never won an individual national title or a major international, although as a college freshman he helped SMU win the 4x100 metre relay at the NCAAs.

Martin eventually became a long-distance truck driver, coached high school and college in the Dallas area, and also managed a non-profit track club. Martin was the cousin of former Dallas Cowboys star defensive end Harvey Martin. Roy Martin was inducted into the Texas Track and Field Hall of Fame in 2013.

Personal Best: 200 – 20.05 (1988).
