Biography

Frank Murphy of the University of Illinois, was awarded a bronze medal in the 1912 pole vault although he only placed fourth. Frank Nelson and Marc Wright were tied for second place at 12-7½ (3.85) and the three athletes who cleared 12-5½ (3.79) were each awarded a bronze medal although they were beaten by three other athletes. After graduating from Illinois, Murphy was business manager of the Illinois Athletic Association from 1922-27 and then began a career in life insurance in Urbana, Illinois, which he did until his retirement. He spent much of his retirement in a wheelchair, the result of a spinal injury.
