Biography

Jerry Thompson won the NCAA 2-miles in 1943 and 1947 and the 5,000 metres in 1948. At the AAUs, he was second in the 3-miles/5K in 1947-48 and third in the 3-miles in 1943. Thompson ran for the University of Texas, where he won the Southwest Conference title in cross-country in 1942-43 and 1946-47. Thompson graduated from Texas in 1949 and received an MBA from the City College of New York (CCNY) in 1964. He served in the Navy during World War II aboard the aircraft carrier Antietam (CV-36) in the Pacific Theater.

Thompson was voted into the Texas Sports Hall of Fame in 1976, and is a member of the University of Texas Longhorn Hall of Honor, the Drake Relays Hall of Fame in 1976 and the TexStats Texas Running Hall of Fame. In 2016 he was inducted into the Texas Track & Field Hall of Fame.

Personal Bests: 2 miles – 9:19.2 (1958); 5000 – 14:41.2 (1948).
