Earle Wilson took up track and field athletics in high school and dabbled in the javelin throw before settling on the long and triple jumps as his specialities. He entered the University of Southern California in 1923 and quickly gained a reputation for his long jump performance in particular. At the 1924 Olympic Trials, however, it was the triple jump in which he placed third, leading to his selection to represent the United States in that event in Paris, where he placed seventh. His only major finish at the nationals came in 1926, when he was runner-up in the AAU triple jump. He continued to compete for USC until his graduation in 1927.
